While most patients have an accurate idea of just how overweight they are, the medical community requires more specificity to effectively evaluate and recommend treatment. As a result, a formula called the “Body Mass Index,” or BMI, was developed. People who are moderately overweight may have a BMI of up to 29.9. Patients with a BMI of 30 to 39.9 are considered obese, and those with BMI's greater than 40 are morbidly obese and likely candidates for bariatric surgery.
