When you look at Amado Gallo, he makes you smile. His warm grin lights up his face and he radiates joy with quiet self-assurance and an air of confidence. Behind that charming smile is a man who has reclaimed his life and bounced back from depression and debilitating health. In 2007 at 283 pounds, Amado was depressed, had nagging back pain, and suffered with extreme heartburn, acid reflux and low self-esteem. He was miserable and hid behind ill-fitting clothes and self-imposed isolation. A year later at 188 pounds, 95 pounds lighter after gastric bypass surgery, Amado is happy, healthy and back in the swing of life. “I feel so much better now! Before weight loss surgery I was barely living – I was just surviving. Gastric bypass surgery gave me my life back.”
With the help of gastric bypass surgery and the support he receives from the staff at the St. Mary Center for Surgical Treatment of Obesity, Amado has turned his life around. “I feel so much better about myself. My health has improved, I am more energetic and I now have a 34” waist and wear a size large shirt. My confidence has soared! I am more active and involved at work and socially outgoing.” Amado has also embarked on the pursuit of one of his long-held dreams. “I always wanted to be an Emergency Medical Technician and because of my weight and lack of confidence, I gave up on it. Since my weight loss, I have returned to school and am now taking EMT classes and hope to become licensed in the near future. Despite the fact that I am the oldest student in the class – even older than the teacher, it is okay because I have learned that it is never too late to start over if you believe in yourself. I feel I can reach my goals and have a renewed vision for the future. Gastric bypass surgery has enabled me to enjoy life again. The best advice I can give to anyone who is seriously obese and having weight-related health problems is to consider weight loss surgery. It can make a tremendous difference in more ways than one – I am living proof!”
